About Gold Eagle Bullion
American Gold Eagle coins were first released 1986 to the U.S. gold market. Produced by the United States Mint, they are the official gold bullion coin of the United States. Gold Eagles are guaranteed by the government to be of the highest possible quality. As such, they are considered by many collectors and investors to be unsurpassed in terms of their purity, weight, design and content.
The American Gold Eagle Coin contains 22 karat gold consisting of 91.67% purity. As gold is naturally quite soft, a small amount of alloy is added during manufacturing process to provide added hardness and help in the prevention of scratches.
Gold coins are produced in various denominations such as 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz versions. The United States Mint promises investors that the coins contain their stated gold weight in troy ounces. Although the gold coins are minted in $5, $10, $25, and $50 denominations, they are actually sold at significantly higher mark-ups on the open market. As these coins are gold bullion, their actual selling price is based on their stated gold content.
It is also important to note that The United States government allows both the proof and bullion versions of American Gold Eagles to be added to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). These official United States gold coins may be added as a retirement savings vehicle by opening a new IRA account or transferring funds in the form of an IRA rollover.
