American Proof Gold Eagles
Proof Gold Eagles are the collectors versions of the popular American Gold Eagle and produced by the United States Mint. American Proof Gold Eagles are minted at the United States Mint at West Point, New York and display the "W" mint mark. Released in strictly limited numbers each year, Proof Gold Eagles are minted in each of the standard bullion sizes, the 1-oz., 1/2-oz., 1/4-oz., and 1/10-oz. versions and are available in 2 or 4-piece sets.
Proof Eagles undergo a specialized minting process using specially polished coin dies. Lustrous coin blanks are manually fed into the presses as they are then struck multiple times, which ensures a highly-detailed coin displaying a softly frosted foreground situated above a mirror-like background.
The design of the coin's obverse features a striking depiction of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' rendition of Lady Liberty, complete with hair softly flowing as she holds a torch with her right hand and grasping an olive branch securely with her left. The coin also features a reverse design which was created by Miley Busiek. This scene showcases a male eagle carrying an an olive branch in his talons as he glides above a nest which hold a female eagle and young hatchlings.
